ART

Artificial Reproductive Technology (ART)

Intrauterine insemination (IUI), as a fertility treatment for lesser fertility issues, is applicable in legally married couple in Taiwan. With the technology of the ART, sperm is washed, separated, and concentrated to obtain high mobile and quality sperm. IUI is always used in conjunction with mild ovarian stimulation or ovulation timing, and the washed sperm is injected into uterine cavity through a transfer catheter.

Indication of IUI
  • The most common reasons are low sperm count or decreased sperm mobility.
  • A hostile cervical condition, including cervical mucus problems to hinder the penetration and mobility of sperm, or cervical stenosis for abnormalities.
  • jaculation dysfunction or difficult sexual penetration.
  • Unexplained infertility.
Not recommended for IUI
  • Few sperm or have severe abnormalities
  • Severe fallopian tube disease
  • A history of pelvic (lower belly) infections
  • Moderate to severe endometriosis
Success Rate

The success of IUI depends on several factors including female age, ovarian function, semen and oocyte qualities, different ovulation inductors, and reason for infertility. If a couple has the IUI procedure performed each month, success rates may reach as high as 20% per cycle. In average, recipients will have 2~ 3 times of IUI to reach higher success rate. Those who did not conceive in 3 times of IUI should consider further advanced treatment.

Factors Affecting Success Rate
  • Follicle number and oocyte quality
  • Sperm amount and mobility
  • Smoker or alcoholism
  • Uterine and pelvic conditions
  • Severity of tubal adhesion or obstruction
